Jon Dolby - Level 5 Apprentice Operational Manager, Wakefield Council

Why did you choose an Apprenticeship?

I began a university education but was unable to complete it, which has been a barrier when applying for jobs. Many roles required a degree, even if the subject was unrelated to the position.

As a parent with young children, resuming university was not an option, as I needed to prioritise supporting my family.

Pursuing an apprenticeship has provided the ideal solution. It allows me to study while working and earning a salary, in a subject that is broad in scope and at a level above my current role. This opportunity has been invaluable, and I am deeply grateful to have had access to it.

What has been the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship so far?

Reflecting on what I have gained from the apprenticeship so far, the most significant takeaway has been learning how to apply new skills in ways that align with my workplace and role. An apprenticeship is not about absorbing vast amounts of theory in a traditional classroom setting; it’s about making the learning practical, relevant to your current job, and meaningful for your future plans.

What have you taken from the apprenticeship so far?

Changing employers partway through my apprenticeship could have been a stressful experience, but thankfully, it wasn’t. Once my new employer agreed to transfer the apprenticeship levy, the process was straightforward. For me, nothing changed—I continued with the same tutor and picked up exactly where I left off.

I was especially keen to continue learning with Skills for Bradford, as I live in the city. Being able to access training close to home and avoid long travel distances has been a great advantage.

How have you progressed or plan to progress following your apprenticeship?

Partway through completing my apprenticeship, I was successful in gaining employment at a higher level—a role I wouldn’t have been able to apply for without being enrolled in the programme. The confidence to test and apply new skills in my new work setting has been invaluable.

Would you recommend an Apprenticeship to others?

I would wholeheartedly recommend an apprenticeship to others. It allows you to take the learning at your own pace while being supported by a fantastic team, including a highly knowledgeable tutor. Studying while working is an excellent way to achieve a recognised and valuable qualification, with the added benefit of being able to practise what you learn in real time.

As a tool for breaking down barriers to education, I can think of no better approach!
