From Low Confidence to Mathematical Success - Alishba's Story
Alishba joined Skills for Work in November 2025 after several unsuccessful attempts at GCSE Maths. Low confidence, high anxiety and previous setbacks had led her to believe Maths wasn’t for her. At enrolment, she shared that she needed additional learning support.
Following a detailed diagnostic assessment, Alishba started Functional Skills Mathematics – Entry Level 2. With tutor led sessions, regular 1:1 support and tailored teaching approaches, she was able to rebuild her foundational skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.
What began with hesitation quickly became a transformational journey. As her understanding grew, so did her confidence. Alishba now enjoys maths lessons, feels confident in her abilities, and is ready to sit her Entry Level 2 exam.
The confidence gained has had a wider impact on her learning. Inspired by her success, she has also enrolled on an English course with Skills for Work, continuing her journey towards gaining essential qualifications.
Alishba says "I nearly gave up on maths but taking that first step changed everything. Now I’m confident, learning, and moving towards my goals".
This case study highlights how taking the first step into learning, supported by the right guidance, patience and tailored provision can transform confidence, reduce barriers, and reopen pathways to achievement.
Alishba’s journey is an inspiration to others in Bradford who may feel that education is no longer an option. It reflects Skills for Work’s commitment to empowering learners, rebuilding confidence, and supporting the local community to build brighter futures through learning.
