Andy Tyson - Duty Officer, Department of Place, Bradford Council

Name: Andy Tyson - Duty Officer, Department of Place, Bradford Council

Apprenticeship: Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor

Why did you choose and apprenticeship?

I chose the apprenticeship because my job role requires the qualification, and I wanted to make sure I had the right skills and knowledge to carry out my responsibilities effectively.  Although I was initially nervous about starting an apprenticeship, I have found it extremely beneficial.  It has helped my to understand why I do the things I do in my role and how to do them more effectively.  The programme has given me additional knowledge, confidence and the ability to carry out my duties more comfortably and professionally as a Duty Manager/Team Leader.

What has been the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship so far?

The most rewarding part has been seeing my personal and professional growth.  I have gained a much better understanding of leadership, communication, planning and organisational culture, and I have been able to apply these skills in my day-to-day duties.

What have you taken from the apprenticeship so far?

So far, I have gained a deeper understanding of my responsibilities as a team leader, including how to manage workloads, support others, make informed decisions and work effectively with different stakeholders.  I've also learned a wide range of tools and techniques - such as communication methods, project planning tools and time management approaches - which have helped me work more efficiently.  The apprenticeship has improved my confidence, self-awareness and ability to reflect on my performance.

How have you progressed or plan to progress following your apprenticeship?

Completing the apprenticeship has strengthened my skills and provided a qualification that support future career development.  I plan to use this experience to take on more responsibilities within my current organisation and work towards further progression, whether through promotion, additional training or higher-level apprenticeships.  The programme has given me the confidence and knowledge to continue building a long-term career in leadership and management.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?

Yes, I would recommend an apprenticeship.  It is a highly effective way to learn skills, practical experience and get a recognised qualification at the same time.  You can earn while you learn, apply new knowledge immediately in your role and receive support from both your workplace and training provider. I would encourage anyone considering an apprenticeship to take the opportunity.
