Keeping Up With Your Children's English     Guided Learning: 10 hours

This free course is intended to help parents and carers to understand how children learn English in school today and how they can support their own child. It will help parents and carers to understand the four core English skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. What will I learn?

During this course you will learn about:

  • how to support your child with reading and sharing books
  • different writing skills that will support your child’s learning in school
  • spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • websites and activities that you can use to improve your child’s English skills

Through taking part in this course you will find that your own confidence and self-esteem in the English skills will also improve.

Course Topics for Key Stage 1 and 2

  • Shared reading (sounding and decoding words, reading story books/poems, describing characters and settings and using activities to read, write and talk about stories)
  • Writing (spelling words, writing about characters, punctuation and grammar)
  • Speaking and listening (strategies to encourage listening to others and speaking clearly)
